New Music: Jamie Lidell. More English Soul??

That Old Soul sound, that has never seemed to lose its appeal in London since the 60’s is again creating a slight buzz in the states. Give credit to Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse for that. The other day while cruising through i-tunes, I came across another soulful Brit. Jamie Lidell’s Jim album is a pretty good soul record. It does have a pop element, which will hurt its longevity but I was impressed with his voice and sheer skill! On my favorite song “All I wanna Do”, Jamie seems to channel the great spirits of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. His harmony on the background vocals are superb and pay tribute to his musical intellect. However, the songwriting gets a little poppy and fails to reach the levels to which his voice really wants to go. It’s a lot like James Morrison’s attempt. Turns out to be Canned Soul…
